Six checks before requesting service
These checks do not require opening equipment or touching electrical components. Stop if you encounter smoke, sparks, standing water near wiring, a burning odor, or a repeatedly tripping breaker.

What the symptom can mean
Warm air at the vents is a result, not a diagnosis. A thermostat can call for cooling while the outdoor unit remains off. The outdoor unit can run while restricted airflow causes the indoor coil to freeze. A clogged drain can trip a safety switch and stop the cooling section while the blower continues.
That overlap is why replacing a part based only on the symptom can waste money. A proper diagnostic follows the cooling call through controls, electrical starting, indoor airflow, outdoor heat rejection, drainage, and refrigerant performance.
Clues worth putting in the service request
Details help narrow the first inspection. Note when the problem started and whether it followed a filter change, power interruption, thermostat replacement, maintenance visit, or unusual noise.
- Indoor and thermostat temperatures
- Whether the indoor blower runs
- Whether the outdoor fan runs
- Ice, water, buzzing, rattling, or odor
- Any error code or blank thermostat display
- Whether the breaker tripped and whether it tripped again
When to stop troubleshooting
Leave a repeatedly tripping breaker off. Turn cooling off if ice is present and do not chip it from the coil or tubing. Avoid opening cabinets, testing capacitors, adding refrigerant, bypassing safety switches, or reaching through an outdoor-unit guard.

Can an AC blow air even when the outdoor unit is not running?
Yes. The indoor blower and outdoor cooling equipment can fail independently. Check the thermostat setting and observe the outdoor unit, but leave electrical testing to a technician.
Will lowering the thermostat further make the house cool faster?
No. Most residential systems cool at their normal capacity when called. A much lower setting can make a struggling system run longer without correcting the cause.
Should I add refrigerant to an AC that is not cooling?
Refrigerant is not consumed like fuel. Low charge can indicate a leak or another service issue. Refrigerant work requires qualified handling and system testing.
